How to Decorate with Patriotic Charm

We get pretty excited about the 4th of July here in Steamboat. A hometown parade rolling down Lincoln Ave, a good old-fashioned rodeo, fireworks lighting up the lake… it’s the kind of small-town celebration that makes your heart swell.

This year, with everything going on in the world and more troops deploying, we wanted to show our patriotism loud and proud. I’m a veteran, and both of my boys are currently serving in the military—so this one hits close to home.

When it comes to decorating the store for the season, it doesn’t take much. Just sprinkle in some red, white, and blue, a few stars and stripes, and you’re on your way.

Quick & Easy Ways to Add Patriotic Vibes to Your Store

🇺🇸 Flags, Flags, Flags!
We always have flags tucked here and there—by the barware, with the horse and cowboy-themed pieces, or sitting on an old school desk. They naturally feel “Americana” to me. But for holidays like the 4th, I go a little wild—grouping them in bunches throughout the shop and even sticking a bucketful by our front sign outside.

🎖️Honoring Our Troops
We keep little military figurines in the store and invite customers to take one. It’s a gentle reminder to pray for our troops, our veterans, and their families. It means a lot to us.

🎨 Handmade Touches
Last year, I made these little fabric flags, as my own homage to Old Glory. They’ve got that homemade, crafty feel I love. This year, we’re gifting one to anyone who spends over $25—just a little thank-you and a way to share the spirit.

Additional Decorating Notes

🫐 Create a Color Story
We like to group items to create little red, white, and blue vignettes around the store. It sparks inspiration and makes it easy for someone to grab a piece or two for their own space.

🎶 Make It a Party
On the 4th—or whichever day we’re open closest—we go all in. Lemonade, cookies, a patriotic playlist… It is America’s birthday after all. Might as well celebrate like it!

🎉 Banners and Drapes
I’ve collected a stash of patriotic banners over the years (mostly thanks to my mom snagging cute ones on sale). I drape them wherever they’ll stay put—no nails, no fuss. It doesn’t have to be perfect; a little whimsy adds charm.

📦 Keep It Handy
Holiday décor is worth investing in—it works for Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and Veterans Day. I keep all our red, white, and blue in one box so it’s easy to pull out when the time comes.

We hope this gives you a little inspiration to bring patriotic charm into your own space. Whether you’re decorating a store, a home, or just your front porch, it doesn’t take much to show your love for the red, white, and blue.

Happy 4th, friends!

XO,
Mary Beth
